Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a famous composer in the 19th century. He is heralded by many to be the best composer of his time. He was a master of the repetition of a melody and the creation of a variation. It has been theorized by many that pure genius cannot be attained without heart-break and adversity. If this true, Tchaikovsky has certainly been through enough problems in his life. It could have have been easy to be a homosexual male, in 19th century Russia. He tried to put up a front by marrying women, but all his romantic exploits ended very quickly. He often tried to kill himself to get out of these marriages.
Even his entire childhood was surrounded by sadness and oppression. He was forced by his father to leave his home at the age of 10. About 4 years later his mother died, and he blamed himself for not being there with her. Many say this spurred him on into writing more music. She was the one who had originally taught him the piano which he had been learning since he was 5.
Throughout Tchaikovsky’s life he had to fight everyone, including himself. He did however channel this into his music. Ofter his themes would be written about a person or character from his life, and he would then have a variation throughout the piece, that explained their growth or the extent of their personality. He would show the true colors of the people around him through the only medium that he knew. Music probably kept him alive for a while since it was his only outlet, in a life filled with oppression.
